An economic analysis of anaerobic digestate fuel pellet production: can digestate fuel pellets add value to existing operations?

چکیده

Anaerobic digestion provides renewable energy through waste valorisation, but the digestate by-product is underutilised and presents a risk to water quality. Mechanical separation partitions phosphorous into solid fraction further processing fuel pellet can provide an additional source of revenue. Previous economic analyses looked only at aspects system (e.g. operational costs solely) requires investigation determine viability. In this paper, assessment production farm-scale anaerobic plants was carried out. The significance work comprehensive energy, phosphorous, balances involved in existing plants. aim paper financial viability with objectives compare two mechanical technologies: screw press, decanting centrifuge. Economies scale hold true for available typical UK farm-based (≤500 kWe) insufficient profitability, costing from £176/t (decanting centrifuge) £215/t (screw press), compared wood sale price £185/t. Increasing quantity by collaboration plant operators reduce cost between £95/t £121/t, improving increasing profit per head cattle 9–20% on dairy farm utilising digestion. has potential aid rural development while also protecting environment contributing diversification supply.

Development of Electroactive and Anaerobic Ammonium-Oxidizing (Anammox) Biofilms from Digestate in Microbial Fuel Cells

Microbial Fuel cells (MFCs) have been proposed for nutrient removal and energy recovery from different wastes. In this study the anaerobic digestate was used to feed H-type MFC reactors, one with a graphite anode preconditioned with Geobacter sulfurreducens and the other with an unconditioned graphite anode. The data demonstrate that the digestate acts as a carbon source, and even in the absenc...

Fungal fermentation on anaerobic digestate for lipid-based biofuel production

BACKGROUND Anaerobic digestate is the effluent from anaerobic digestion of organic wastes. It contains a significant amount of nutrients and lignocellulosic materials, even though anaerobic digestion consumed a large portion of organic matters in the wastes. Utilizing the nutrients and lignocellulosic materials in the digestate is critical to significantly improve efficiency of anaerobic digest...

Fuel Pellet Production from Reed Canary Grass

This thesis focuses on two main areas: methods for assessing regional supply potentials of reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) (RCG); and process technology for the production of high-quality RCG pellets. Partial equilibrium modelling, incorporating a break-even price approach, was used to examine supply potentials for RCG in Västerbotten County, northern Sweden. A remote sensing method...

Evaluation of anaerobic digestate as a substrate for vermicomposting

Vermicomposting is an established process to convert organic wastes into vermicastings suitable for plant growth. This research investigated the vermicomposting of anaerobic digestate with four different ratios of sawdust as a bulking material, for 75 days. The optimum proportion of anaerobic digestate to sawdust was identified as 70:30 based on worm growth and reproduction. Vermicomposting pro...

Stochastic techno-economic analysis of alcohol-to-jet fuel production

BACKGROUND Alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) is one of the technical feasible biofuel technologies. It produces jet fuel from sugary, starchy, and lignocellulosic biomass, such as sugarcane, corn grain, and switchgrass, via fermentation of sugars to ethanol or other alcohols. This study assesses the ATJ biofuel production pathway for these three biomass feedstocks, and advances existing techno-economic anal...
